A legally required role in occupational safety and health — and an obligation that applies to companies of every sector and every size.

What it is about

Advising before something happens

The safety specialist supports the employer in meeting their obligations for the safety and health of employees. They advise — responsibility remains with the employer.

Together with occupational medicine, they are one of the prevention specialists. Both must be involved by law, either from within the company or through an external service.

Legal basis: §§ 72 to 77 of the Austrian Occupational Safety and Health Act (ArbeitnehmerInnenschutzgesetz, ASchG).

Identifying and assessing hazards, maintaining the risk assessment
Giving the employer expert advice
Inspecting workplaces and workstations
Helping with accidents and near misses
Assessing the safety of work equipment
Selecting personal protective equipment and advising on it
Planning and helping to shape safety instructions
Emergency and evacuation plans, first aid organisation
Handling hazardous substances
Documentation and annual report

§ 82a ASchG

How much prevention time a company needs

The minimum time per employee and calendar year depends on the type of workplace, not on the size of the company.

Office workplaces 1.2 hours per employee per year — likewise for workplaces with comparable hazards and strain.

Other workplaces 1.5 hours per employee per year, for example in warehouses, workshops and production.

Breakdown At least 40 per cent safety specialist, at least 35 per cent occupational medicine, the remaining 25 per cent depending on the hazards.

Up to 50 employees Instead of fixed prevention time, regular site visits (§ 77a ASchG), available free of charge through AUVAsicher.

In-house or external? An in-house specialist knows the company and is always there; the basic training comprises at least 288 teaching units and is offered by WIFI, BSVÖ, TÜV and other providers. For smaller companies, an external prevention service is usually the more practical option.
